Research files, ovens, and how to finish one tree without going AFK in a tornado.

Skill Tree Guide

The skill tree (the live description says tech trees) is the system that made testers sit up. Every species has its own tree. You spend a research file, start a node, and wait. Advanced files show up as a second tier. This is not a Cos mutation roulette. It is a timed build.

How to start a node

  1. Open the tree on your current Avatar — not on a specimen you left in the menu.
  2. Confirm you have a research file (or advanced file for later nodes).
  3. Start one research. Launch previews did not describe a healthy “queue five and sleep” flow.
  4. Park in cover. A meteor does not pause the timer in a way you will like.
  5. When it completes, pick the next node with the research planner instead of whatever glows.

Files drop in the world and craft at stations (testers mentioned an oven). That loop is why crafting sits next to this guide. Completing an entire tree was an early-access mission, so it is possible in a dedicated week and not in ten minutes.

What to unlock first

Order of operations for a new adult:

  1. Survival — hunger/thirst relief, defense, anything that keeps a growth from resetting.
  2. Mobility — turn radius, stamina, swim if you live near sharks.
  3. Offense — only after you can leave a fight. Damage nodes on a starving body are cosplay.

Species-specific nodes should exist. Launch reviewers asked for more unique paths so every tree is not a copy. Until patches land, assume some nodes are generic stats and some are kit-defining. Kit-defining wins.

Files are the gate, not DNA

DNA buys and grows Avatars. Files research them. Daily login and tester bundles dumped 35 files and 20 advanced files as a flex reward — that tells you the scarcity. Do not sell files in a panic trade. Do not start a vanity node because a YouTuber’s Cyntoli looked pretty.

If a code ever grants files, bank them until you finish how to grow on that body.

Time management

Start research at the beginning of a session, then go eat, craft, or nest. The wait is the grind people complained about. Stack it with real play. AFK in an open field is how disasters write your wiki death story.

If you must leave the PC, hide. Mobile can keep the session alive if the app does not suspend; do not count on it.

Builds and subspecies

A health subspecies wants different nodes than a speed fork. Finish the fork decision on subspecies before you sink advanced files. Two-Jactal-style flight forks should buy torque and brakes, not extra bite, unless you enjoy cratering.

PvP-focused players will rush offense. That is fine on an adult with a pack. It is not fine on a juvenile that still cannot fly — how to fly.

When a tree is “done”

One completed tree was a tester mission. That is the definition of done for launch week. Extra trees on extra Avatars are collection play. Events on the roadmap may add nodes; we will note them rather than pretend the tree is frozen.

If a script offers instant complete, that is the fastest ban in the scripts hub. The tree is a timer. Respect it or play a different game.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Harp Isles questions.

Where do research files come from?

World pickups and crafting stations (ovens). Dailies and tester bundles also granted them.

Can I research several nodes at once?

Plan as if you have one active research. Do not assume a queue until the live UI shows one.

What should I unlock first?

Survival, then mobility, then damage. Details are in the research planner.

Is the skill tree the same for every Avatar?

No. Each species has its own tree. See the avatar roster.
